Dementia is a general term to describe a collection of symptoms that one may experience if they are living with a variety of diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. Diseases grouped under the general term "dementia" are caused by abnormal brain changes. Dementia symptoms trigger a decline in thinking skills, also known as cognitive abilities, severe enough to impair daily life and independent function. They also affect behavior, feelings, and relationships.

There are several types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. At Friendship Center, we provide day care services for those living with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, other forms of dementia, and related conditions.

Early signs of dementia may include:

• Memory loss, especially short-term memory
• Difficulty following conversations or completing familiar tasks
• Changes in mood or behavior
• Problems with language or finding the right words

A doctor can diagnose dementia through a combination of medical history, physical exam, and cognitive tests.

Currently, there is no cure for dementia. However, treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. With our day care center and support groups in Santa Barbara, our goal is to provide resources, respite, hope, and positivity to those living with these conditions and their family members.

Helping someone living with dementia can come in many forms. This includes providing emotional support, helping with daily activities, creating a safe and familiar environment, encouraging social interaction, and seeking professional help. We are honored to be a small part of your community and care team.
